Diffusing the noise to save the dream
Dear Diary,
After 16 long years in diaspora, I find myself reflecting on the journey that has shaped me into the filmmaker I am today. It’s a journey filled with dreams, challenges, and the relentless pursuit of a vision that often feels just out of reach.
When I first arrived in the new land, my heart was ablaze with the desire to change the world through storytelling. I envisioned films that would shine a light on the pressing issues of our time, particularly the rights of women and children. I believed that through my pen on paper and fingers on a keyboard, I could inspire change, evoke empathy, and spark conversations that matter.
However, as I navigate this path, I am learning a crucial lesson: seeking too many opinions can sometimes extinguish the very fire that fuels your dreams. For so many years, I have been too eager for validation. I sought advice from everyone—friends, mentors, even strangers.
Each opinion, while often well-intentioned, began to cloud my vision. I found myself second-guessing my ideas, altering my narratives to fit what others deemed acceptable or marketable.
It was during this tumultuous period that I faced personal political struggles back home. The weight of life-threatening issues and the longing for connection often felt overwhelming. Yet, amidst the chaos, I have realized that my voice is unique, and my stories are worth telling. I am
learning to trust my instincts and embrace my perspective, even if it is diverging from themainstream.
So, I have decided to make a conscious decision to filter the noise. I am beginning to focus on the stories that resonated with me deeply—stories of resilience, courage, and the fight for rights that too often go unheard. I am surrounding myself with a supportive community that is encouraging my vision rather than diluting it.
Today, I stand at a crossroads, more determined than ever to share my stories and everyone’s, from all over the world. I understand that not everyone will agree with my approach, and that’s okay. My journey has taught me that authenticity is key. The world needs voices that challenge the status quo, and I am ready to be one of them.
As I am changing, I carry with me the lessons of the past. I am continuing to fight for the rights of women and children through my films (I am determined to produce), using my experiences as fuel for my passion.I am learning to embrace my dreams, unapologetically and fiercely.
Here’s to the stories yet to be told and the impact they will create.
With hope and determination.
