You stand at the edge of a new beginning, just like Juma Musoke aka Jumex did when he first set foot in Massachusetts.
Sitting with Annet in front of our cameras for his interview you could sense, his heart pounding as he shared his transition story. It was a moment of vulnerability, but also one of empowerment. He wanted the world to see that immigrants like him have dreams, aspirations, and the tenacity to succeed.
Jumex: I remember the day I stepped off the plane in Massachusetts, my heart racing with a mix of excitement and fear. I had left behind my home in Uganda, a place filled with both cherished memories and countless challenges. As I stood there, surrounded by strangers and the unfamiliar sounds of a new country, I clutched my dreams tightly, determined to carve out a life for myself.
I had always been known as Jumex among my friends, a name that carried with it a sense of familiarity and warmth. But here, in this vast land of opportunity, I was just another immigrant trying to find my way. My English was shaky at best, but I knew that if I surrounded myself with the right people, I could learn and grow. I believed in myself, and I held onto that belief like a lifeline.
My first job was as a caregiver. It was a humble beginning, but it taught me the value of compassion and hard work. I learned to communicate through gestures and smiles, breaking down the language barrier one day at a time. After that, I transitioned to working as a security guard, a role that allowed me to observe and understand the world around me more deeply. Yet, I always felt a yearning for something more.
Being self-made was in my blood; I couldn’t stand the thought of being employed forever. With a few connections I had made along the way, I took a leap of faith and started a transporting company. I poured my heart and soul into it, but despite my efforts, it didn’t pan out as I had hoped. Failure was not an option for me, though. I refused to let it define my journey.
With the support of my network and the lessons I had learned from my first venture, I launched another company. This time, I was more prepared, armed with the wisdom of experience.’
As he spoke, you se in his eyes imagining faces of those who had come before him, and those who would come after, nodding in understanding.
Jumex: ‘My journey is not just my own; it is a testament to the resilience of countless others who dare to dream. I realize that my story is not just about overcoming obstacles but about the connections I have forged along the way.
Today, as I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude. I have built a life in this new land, surrounded by the right people who have supported me through thick and thin. I continue to believe in myself, and I encourage others to do the same. Our stories matter, and they have the power to inspire change. In the end, it’s not just about where we come from, but where we are going and the impact we can make along the way.”
